The greylag harrier (Circus pygargus) is a graceful and rare bird of prey known for its impressive gliding flight. The male is beautiful silver-grey in colour with black wing tips, distinguishing him from the brown female. This species breeds in open agricultural areas and grasslands, where it hunts mice, insects and small birds. Groningen is one of the few places in the Netherlands where you can still spot the greylag harrier, thanks to efforts to protect its habitat. My experience with the species I photographed for half a lifetime is diverse. The male flies like one out and seems very light. A nice photo of him is like coming home it just feels right. Capturing this moment felt like a small victory. The greylag harrier is rare and vulnerable, but here in Groningen it is holding its own. Capturing his flight is not only a visual highlight, but also a reminder of how important it is to protect our wildlife.
