A ship on the high seas in flying gale, known as ?The gust of wind', Willem van de Velde (II), ca. 1680 A large ship is in distress. A gust of wind caused the mast to break and one of the sails has come loose. It is a seventy-gun British man-of-war. Willem van de Velde II entered the service of the English royal house in 1672, together with his father, who was also a marine painter. This painting and the accompanying canvas.
