Enkhuizen is a city and municipality in the West Friesland region, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The municipality lies on both the Markermeer and the IJsselmeer. The municipality has 18,441 inhabitants in an area of 116.04 km² (of which 103.62 km² is water) (1 April 2016, source: CBS). Besides the town of the same name, the municipality of Enkhuizen also includes the village of Oosterdijk and hamlet Westeinde. Enkhuizen is known as the 'Herring Town' because of its past as a centre for herring fishing. Partly because of its water sports, the town is an important tourist centre (marinas, Sprookjeswonderland, Zuiderzee Museum). In addition, the town has internationally renowned seed companies and horticulture, as well as a cluster of plastics industry. Enkhuizen spoke Enkhuizens, a West Frisian dialect.
