The island of Awarradam, about 225 km from Paramaribo, lies on the rapids of the same name. Awarradam lies in the Gran Rio River, which joins the Pikin Rio River 30 km downstream. At this point, the Upper Suriname River begins, which flows 75 km further into the Brokopondo reservoir.
