In Greek mythology, Europe was a Phoenician princess on whom the supreme god Zeus had the lascivious eye.
According to the best-known version of the story, one day the young Europa was playing with her friends on the beach near Sidon when Zeus was struck by the girl's charms. In order to escape the eye of his wife Hera, but also not to scare the girl with his divine appearance, Zeus turned into a bull. When Europe had climbed playfully on the back of the beautiful, friendly looking animal, he walked with her into the sea and swam in one piece to the island of Crete, his birthplace.
On this work of art the young blond woman sits sexy on the back of the bull swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. Her cleavage is so open that a tit is visible. Around the maid and the ox swim naked men and women and above them fly some putti, angels.
Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre (Paris, France, 6 March 1714 - Paris, 15 May 1789) was a French painter and draughtsman.
