About the artwork

The whelk is the largest of the Dutch snails. The shell can grow up to twelve centimeters. It is a predator and scavenger that occurs in many parts of our coastal waters and in the North Sea. The whelk is a representative of a Pacific wave of immigration. The species reached the North Sea during the Pliocene, about 3.5 million years ago and since then has not disappeared. The whelk is good to eat.
