Tea domes are a typically Dutch phenomenon. In doing so, it is often thought, not least because of the name, that teahouses were primarily intended as places to drink tea. However, it rather served as a prestige object of the owner who could afford it and was mainly used for various leisure activities such as drinking (tea but also alcohol), dining and reading. They are often located in country houses, summer residences of wealthy city dwellers. Tea pavilions almost all date from the 17th century to the early 20th century.
