Thorn is known as the White Town because of its white houses in the centre.
Until its reclamation in the tenth century, the area around Thorn was very marshy. On the edge of this swamp ran the Roman road from Maastricht to Nijmegen. Around 990, a Benedictine monastery was founded on a height close to the Meuse. From the 12th century onward, this Thorn Abbey developed into a secular monastic community in which the rules of order were freely interpreted.
The foundation grew into a small independent principality, the Abbey Principality of Thorn. This was the smallest sovereign state within the Holy Roman Empire. The princedom was rich.
In 1007 Thorn acquired market and customs rights. Town rights were granted in the 13th century.
