Lake Kochelsee is located 70 km south of Munich on the edge of the Bavarian Alps. It belongs to the municipalities of Kochel am See in the east and Schlehdorf in the west. The lake is owned by the Free State of Bavaria and administered by the Bavarian Administration of State Palaces, Gardens and Lakes. While the southern part of the lake is surrounded by mountains, the northern part lies in the flat foothills of the Alps and is bordered by the Loisach-Kochelsee marshes. In terms of its natural location, the lake is considered to be a lake on the edge of the Alps.[3] In the context of Germany's lake typology, it corresponds to type 4, "Historic Alpine Lake".[4] The history of Kochel's settlement began on the so-called Birg near Altjoch, a rock cone directly on the shore of Kochelsee.
