Three boats, ships, vessels are seen in this photograph, taken from the Parkkade in Rotterdam. Three boats, ships, vessels of very different size, speed and function.
In the foreground, we see one of the characteristic yellow-black water taxis hurtling forward amid splashing Maas water.
The Cornelis Jr. behind it is one of the many barges transporting goods from the port of Rotterdam to the hinterland. This Rijnaak is somewhat slower than the water taxi, but that makes sense given its much larger size.
The largest vessel in the picture we see in the background: the SS Rotterdam. This Holland America Line cruise ship once sailed the oceans, but since 2008 it has been berthed at Katendrecht Head. The ship is in use as a hotel and conference centre. Since its restoration, it is a beautiful piece of history, a nostalgic memento of transatlantic sailing from the 1950s.
