Mainads or Maenads (Latin), also known as Bacchantes (Βάκχαι), are figures from Greek mythology. They are nymphs who accompany and worship Dionysos (god of wine, fun and dance). The mainads wear long robes and animal skins. They are often depicted with a crown of vines. They are known as possessed women ("in Bacchian rapture") who perform wild dances and give in to gross violence, sex, drink and mutilation.
The mythical woman stands largely naked in this portrait, leaving her hips, belly, torso and breasts bare. Bitches' necks and arms are bare from the slender white body.
Ferdinand Leeke (April 7, 1859 - 1923) was a German painter. Born in Burg bei Magdeburg, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany, he studied at the Academy of Munich.
