About ‘Totem’ by Jacco Hinke

The three stacked figures form a vertical composition in which each shape possesses its own character and presence, whilst at the same time forming a single whole. The powerful contours and vivid areas of colour are reminiscent of traditional totem symbolism, but the visible brushstrokes, the matt paint and the natural jute backing give the work a contemporary, artisanal feel.

The rough texture of the jute canvas is deliberately left visible and forms an essential part of the painting. This creates a subtle tension between the organic support and the vibrant paint, giving the work an appearance that is both robust and refined.

‘Totem’ is about connectedness, identity and the power of symbols that transcend generations. It invites the viewer not only to observe the individual figures, but also to experience the relationship between them: a vertical narrative in which humans, animals and the imagination together form a timeless whole.
