Toyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was an important Japanese ukiyo-e artistToyohara Kunichika (1835-1900) was an important Japanese ukiyo-e artist of the 19th century. He is best known for his colourful woodblock prints and portraits of kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers and beauties. Kunichika was a master of the ukiyo-e genre, which captured the fleeting pleasures and everyday life of the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries) in Japan. His works are characterised by their vivid portrayal of facial expressions and costumes, bringing to life the personalities of the people depicted. Kunichika also created series of woodblock prints, often depicting stories from famous plays or historical events.he of the 19th century.
