The Emmerdennen, a beautiful forest with many different environments, plants and animals, found in Emmen, Drenthe.
A well-known location in the forest the Emmerdennen is the lake on the east side. There has been a fallen tree here for several years. In windless weather a beautiful reflection of this can be seen. The tree and its reflection almost seem to depict something. A slingshot or with enough imagination even a human being. The reflection and the dark green with the white of the tree make the image almost unrecognizable as a photograph.
This tree is now typical of the Emmerdennen.
The tree is dead, yet full of life. Fallen trees are enormously important for biodiversity. Countless fungi, insects and animals live in and around dead trees. Small critters and fungi eat from it and use it as living space. Larger animals in turn eat the critters that live in them such as hedgehogs, pigs and birds. Fallen trees in water are also often used by waterfowl to build nests. In natural areas, therefore, it is often chosen to leave the trees in place or to remove only the part that has fallen on a path. This way it only offers benefits to our beautiful nature.
