The squirrel is 20 to 28 centimeters long and weighs 250 to 350 grams. Its bushy plumed tail is 15 to 20 centimeters long. It is an omnivore, belonging to the rodents.
Unlike its name suggests, its coat color can range from black to yellowish, with various shades of red and brown in between. Melanism occurs, but the degree to which individuals are melanistic varies by region. Usually the animals are reddish brown with a white belly side, more grayish dark brown in winter. The color also becomes more grayish as the squirrel ages. The ear tufts are especially noticeable in winter. A squirrel can put on the hairs on the plume tail.
Squirrels live 3 to 7 years in the wild, and up to 10 years in captivity.
