An endless field of pink tulips fills the image, with a soft haze of green in the background: young trees, just in leaf. This shot from the Northeast Polder shows spring in its most colourful form; full of bloom, light and anticipation. The tulips line up tightly, each with their own variation of pink: from fuchsia to soft pink, shimmering under the diffuse light of a light spring day.
The composition is uncluttered but rich: the repetition of shape and colour gives an almost graphic pattern, while nature in the background anchors the image in the reality of the Dutch landscape. The petals are just unfolded, the greenery fresh, the sky clear but not bright.
For lovers of flowers, colour, seasonal change and Holland at its most beautiful, this image is an ode to spring. It shows how the landscape comes alive, and how tulips, so mundane yet special, create an overwhelming effect in mass.
