About ‘Tunnelling’ by Jaco Verheul

Situated 4 km from Soultz-sous-Forêts, between the municipalities of Hunspach and Ingolsheim, Schoenenbourg Fort is one of the most important structures of the Maginot Line, built between 1931 and 1935.
Its purpose, supported by neighbouring fortifications, was to prevent a possible enemy invasion of northern Alsace and, more specifically, an advance by German troops through Wissembourg towards the south during the Second World War.

This simple fortification, whose two imposing entrance blocks are still visible in the heart of the Hunspach Forest, lies buried at an average depth of 22 metres. It comprises a 3-kilometre-long network of galleries connecting the various living quarters, service areas and combat zones.

It could accommodate up to 630 men and, following a few false alarms, was permanently manned from 24 August 1939.
