Turkish wedding, Jean Baptiste Vanmour, ca. 1720 - ca. 1737
Along the banks of the Bosporus, a colourful procession accompanies a bride to her groom's house. The bride rides on horseback, under a canopy that is carried by four men. Right in front of the tent is the imam, the religious leader who will bless the marriage. The pyramid-shaped tower, made of gold wire in the shape of ears of corn, is a symbol of fertility.
