Donker Utrecht about Twijnstraat aan de Werf on the Oudegracht in Utrecht
Twijnstraat aan de Werf aan de Oudegracht in Utrecht. The approximately two-kilometre-long Oudegracht can be seen as the connection between the Kromme Rijn and the Vecht rivers and cuts through the entire city centre. For centuries, it was used as a supply and drainage route for merchandise and building materials. The canal water was used for all kinds of production processes, such as beer brewing, and building locks in 1275 gave the water level a constant low level. Storage cellars of houses were extended under the streets to the canal and new quays were built before these cellars. This created the typical wharves and wharf cellars. This process was complete in the 15th century. This photo was taken at dusk on 24 February 2019, Dark Utrecht. This is the name of my series of photos of Utrecht places after sunset. Dark Utrecht. That's the name of my still growing series of photos of Utrecht places after sunset. Most of the Dark Utrecht pictures I take in the evening twilight. In the 'blue quarter' to be more precise. After sunset the sky quickly turns an intense dark blue and at some point a perfect balance is created between sky light on the one hand and street and building lighting on the other hand.
Characteristic for my style is the balance in the often tranquil image, the rich, intense colours and the absence of chaos.
