Before the construction of the Pannerdensch Canal, this was the main course of the Lower Rhine. From Wijk bij Duurstede the main stream is called Lek and the old stream Kromme Rijn.
The current railway bridge is the fifth version. The first railway bridge was built in 1879 and had several arches and an extra pillar in the river. On 10 May 1940 the bridge was blown up during the German attack, and on 19 November the destroyed bridge was replaced by a bridge from Zaltbommel. Because this bridge only consisted of one track, signal boxes arose on both sides of the bridge from which the train traffic was controlled. During the Battle of Arnhem the bridge was destroyed again, and then replaced by a temporary bridge from Dordrecht. In 1952 it was replaced by the final bridge as it still stands today.
