Underground music – New York City by Yahya Algehaili

At Broadway–Lafayette Street in New York, a subway train rushes into the station while, on the opposite platform, a musician continues playing his trumpet. The moving train dissolves into a silver blur behind him, while the musician remains sharp and almost motionless. For me, that contrast between speed and stillness is the heart of the photograph.

Around him is a small cross-section of the city: commuters wearing headphones, carrying backpacks, checking their phones, sitting on a bench or preparing to board. Everyone seems absorbed in a different destination, yet the music briefly connects the scene. The open instrument case at the musician’s feet makes it clear that this is not a staged performance, but part of everyday life beneath the streets of Manhattan.

I wanted to capture more than a New York subway station. The image is about the rhythm of the city itself: noise, movement, waiting and unexpected moments of beauty all happening at once. The dark steel structure of the station frames the brighter opposite platform almost like a theatre stage, with the trumpet player at its centre.

As wall art, the photograph has a distinctly urban and cinematic character. The combination of the rushing subway, the musician and the waiting passengers tells a recognisably New York story, where anonymity, constant movement and individual expression intersect for just a few seconds before the train arrives and everyone moves on.
