The Valais Alps, also known as the "Pennine Alps", are the high mountain part of the Western Alps south of the Rhone and lie mostly in the Swiss canton of Valais and to a lesser extent in Italy; the state border runs along the main ridge as the southern edge of the Valais Alps. The Valais Alps are by far the most powerful mountain group in the Alps. The highest peaks in Switzerland are found here - 43 four-thousand-metre peaks alone are gathered in this area.
