La Paz is departmental capital of the department of La Paz and the administrative capital of the country of Bolivia. At the 2001 census, the city of La Paz had a population of about one million. La Paz is located in a gorge, down a plain, at an altitude of 3,600 metres on the La Paz River. On top of the plain is the city of El Alto with La Paz's international airport, also called El Alto. La Paz is frequently mistaken for the world's highest capital, but the official capital is Sucre.
