With the ship De Blijdschap, we sailed just before evening to Engelsmanplaat, a sandbar in the heart of the Wadden Sea. The trip lasted an hour and took us across calm waters under a grey, dreary sky. There was unfortunately no sunset; the horizon dissolved into misty shades of grey. Still, this trip had something special. The silence on the mud flats was almost tangible. Engelsmanplaat, located between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog, looms at low tide as a hidden world, where birds shelter and seals rest. The Wadden Sea showed its rugged and subdued side: austere, but impressive. With no sun, no play of colours, but with an atmosphere that lingered - a reminder of the strength and calm of this unique piece of nature.
