Vase with Chinese asters and garden ladioli Paris, August - September 1886 Vincent van Gogh (1853 - 1890) oil on canvas, 61.1 cm x 46.1 cm Van Gogh had never been economical with paint. But after being introduced to the flower still lifes of Adolphe Monticelli (1824-1886) in June 1886, he went a step further. This French artist painted variegated bouquets with thick paint and emphatic brushstrokes. Van Gogh compared them to liquid clay. In still lifes like Vase with Chinese asters and garden ladioli, you can see how robustly he now also put the flowers on canvas himself.
