The first thing you see from Piazzetta San Marco is the monastery complex of San Giorgio Maggiore. More precisely, this square is an island in the immediate vicinity of Giudecca Island with a long row of low-rise houses. From the island of Giudecca, looking north, you can see the district of Dorsoduro. The main building on the island of San Giorgio Maggiore is the monastery dedicated to St. George with the 16th century basilica.
It was built on the site of a previous building from around 982, when Benedictine monks settled here. The new building from the 16th century was designed by the famous architect Andrea Palladio around 1566. The church was consecrated around 1610. The basilica in the shape of a cross has three naves, is very large, bright and friendly. The chancel is crowned by a dome and behind it is the presbytery with the choir stalls made of precious wood. This is a work of great craftsmanship.
