About the artwork

William Etty (1787-1849) was a 19th century British painter who specialised in nude painting. Born in York, England, Etty showed an early interest in art and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in London. His works are characterised by their sensual depiction of the human body, exploring both mythological and historical themes.

Etty was known for his technical mastery, particularly in the treatment of skin tones and fabrics. Although he was recognised in his time, his bold approach to the nude genre was sometimes controversial. Nevertheless, his contribution to British art history remains significant, and many of his works, including 'The Sirens and Ulysses' and 'Cleopatra's Arrival in Cilicia', are now admired in prestigious collections worldwide. Etty challenged the boundaries of artistic expression of his time and had a lasting influence on the development of nude painting.
