The crown pigeon is found in swamps and wooded areas on islands west of New Guinea such as Misool, Waigeo, Salawati and Batanta. Further on Bird's Head (West Papua) and also on Ceram (South Moluccas) in Indonesia. Introduced to the South Moluccas, this bird species was most likely a common bird until the 20th century. On mainland New Guinea and on the islands of Salawati and Ceram, it is still a fairly common bird locally, but on Batanta and in some places in West Papua it has been extirpated.
