The Drommedaris is the southern gateway to the city of Enkhuizen. It is the most famous building in Enkhuizen. The building was erected as a defensive structure at the entrance to the Oude Haven, and was originally located on the Westfriese Omringdijk. Construction lasted from 1649-1657.
Over the centuries, the building was used as a storage depot for gunpowder, prison, guard barracks, excise office, spinning mill/weaving mill, as a telegraph office (under the gate), and the first exhibition of the Zuiderzee Museum also took place in the building in the summer of 1949. Around 1960, a bar was built on the ground floor. Later, a café-restaurant was built on the first floor and the space downstairs became, just like the second floor, a small auditorium for all kinds of activities such as concerts, theatre performances and exhibition space for art objects. Nowadays the building is only used as a cultural centre.
