Situated in the mountains of the southern Harz, the town of Stolberg is known for its medieval half-timbered houses and narrow cobbled streets, which are mainly found around the market square. The small town is considered one of the most beautiful places in the entire Harz Mountains. The municipality belongs to the district of Mansfeld-Südharz in the federal state of Saxony-Anhalt. The town is romantically nestled in four valleys at 300 to 350 metres above sea level.
Stolberg Castle, which dates back to the 13th century, stands on a hill above the town that slopes down on three sides. The Dutch royal family is closely linked to the history of northern and central Germany. It has its origins in the southern Harz Mountains, at Stolberg Castle. It was here that Juliana of Stolberg and Wernigerode was born in 1506. She is the mother of William of Orange and is still honoured today as the ancestress of the Orange family.
The Harz is a low mountain range in Germany and the highest mountain range in northern Germany. It lies at the intersection of Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt and Thuringia.
At 1142 metres above sea level, the Brocken is the highest mountain in the Harz, in Saxony-Anhalt and in the whole of northern Germany. It is located in the Schierke district of the town of Wernigerode in the Harz district of Saxony-Anhalt.
