About "View of the centre of Namur from the Citadel"

About the artwork

Namur is a city in Belgium, located at the confluence of the Sambre and Meuse rivers, making it historically an important trading centre. It is the capital of Wallonia, the French-speaking southern part of Belgium.

Surrounded by rolling hills and lush countryside, making it a picturesque destination, Namur has a rich history dating back to Roman times. The city is a strategic military location because of its location, particularly known for the Namur Citadel, which has been a fortress since the Middle Ages. A landmark of the city, the citadel offers panoramic views and is an important historical site, having played a role in several military campaigns throughout history.

The first fortifications probably date from the 3rd century, but the citadel as we know it today began to take shape in the Middle Ages. The citadel was significantly expanded during the Middle Ages and became one of the most formidable fortresses in Europe. It played a crucial role in several military conflicts, including during the Middle Ages, the Napoleonic Wars and both World Wars.

The citadel's extensive fortifications include bastions, ramparts and underground tunnels. These were designed to protect the stronghold from invaders and provide strategic advantages.

The Namur Citadel is more than just a historical site; it is a symbol of the city and its resilience. It symbolises the city's rich history and strategic importance over the centuries.
