Volvo P1900 Convertible at Golden Hour

by Jan Keteleer

When I first imagined this scene, I wasn't thinking about a car. I was thinking about a feeling: the quiet pause at the end of a long day, when the light turns golden and everything seems to slow down. The Volvo P1900 became my way of holding onto that moment.

I painted the convertible in soft pastel blue, parked on a gravel country path with its top folded down, as if its driver had just stepped away to watch the sun sink behind the rolling hills. I worked in an impressionistic impasto style, where thick layers of paint rise from the canvas, and let every brushstroke stay visible. I wanted you to sense the texture of the road, the warmth of the air, and the hum of an engine just switched off.

The chrome bumper, round headlights and slender windshield catch the late light and glow against the cool body of the car. Behind it, an autumn tree burns in deep burgundy and olive, while the distant hills dissolve into amber haze.

For me, this painting is about the meeting of warm and cool, of memory and presence. We all carry a road like this somewhere inside us. I hope this one brings you back to yours.
