An aquarelle, via the French aquarelle from the Italian acquarello or acquarella, "washed drawing", is a painting made with watercolor. The terms watercolour or water paint are also used to refer to the genre or the watercolour technique as a working method.[1] The painting technique of watercolour painting involves painting with water soluble paint on special thick watercolour paper. A characteristic of the pure watercolour technique is that the colouring pigment is applied in an unbroken layer so that the paper shines through. Also no opaque paint (gouache) is used, in particular no opaque white. The white in a watercolour therefore always comes from the paper.
