Watercolour of the Lange Jan in Middelburg, Zeeland. The historic town of Middelburg was founded in the ninth century. The Lange Jan dates from the 2nd half of the 14th century with its associated Abbey complex. The Lange Jan has been damaged and restored several times. The heaviest destruction came in May 1940 when Middelburg was set on fire. The Lange Jan was also destroyed on that occasion. Nevertheless, restoration was decided on as early as 1940. By 1955, this restoration was complete.
