About ‘Weiße Wiek – Wismar’ by Frans Nijland

The small fishing boats in the harbour of Weiße Wiek are a reminder of a time when the Baltic Sea dictated the rhythm of daily life. Generations of fishermen set out from this coast to catch herring, cod, flounder, plaice and eel. With their nets, fish traps and simple equipment, they braved wind and weather to provide for their families.

The weather-beaten boats, equipped with buoys and fishing gear, still bear the marks of this maritime past. They tell the story of hard work, craftsmanship and a deep connection to the sea. Set against the calm waters of the harbour, they serve as a tangible reminder of a centuries-old fishing tradition that has shaped the Mecklenburg coast. The marina, with its modern sailing boats, now dominates the scene, but this photograph captures a slice of history of the people who have dedicated their lives to the Baltic Sea.
