The Westersingel is one of the watercourses created in the nineteenth century to improve water quality. At the time, Westersingel was still outside the city; today, with Central Station on the axis of the canal, it is part of downtown Rotterdam.
Old and new come together here. The buildings on the right are pre-war; they fall just outside area that was destroyed in the bombing on 14 May 1940. The high-rise buildings of Calypso and the Millennium Tower in the background represent the new Rotterdam.
The big tree in the middle is the Breytenbachplataan, which has its own little peninsula in the canal. There are still some leaves on the trees, so the season can be guessed fairly accurately: late November.
Perhaps unusually at that time of year: it is windless. But that does make the water of the canal a perfect mirror. Only in the foreground do we look through the mirror and see fallen leaves just below the surface of the water.
