About ‘When morning touches the volcano’ by Walter G. Allgöwer

In the first breath of the day, Teide National Park lies still, as if the world were practising its own awakening. The path up to Alto de Guajara winds its way like a quiet thought through the volcanic landscape, 2,715 metres above sea level, where the earth is rough and honest. The sun cautiously feels its way over the flanks of the mountains, and the rock begins to glow as if it were carrying an inner fire from past ages. Shadows flow downhill as the light exposes the ribs of the volcano. Every ridge tells of pressure, of patience, of the slow work of time. The Teide rises distant and yet omnipresent, 3715 metres high, a silent guardian over Tenerife, over the Canary Islands, over the Atlantic Ocean, which breathes somewhere beyond the field of vision. The air is cool, clear, almost fragile. With every step, the morning seems to become bigger, wider, more open. Colours change from deep brown to gold, from ash grey to warm red. It is as if the landscape itself glows, not from sunlight alone, but from memory. Up here, the word "hurry" loses its meaning. The mountain demands no victory, only attention. And in the silent panorama of the sunrise, the ascent becomes an inner journey – slow, powerful and of a beauty that needs no explanation.
