The white-headed duck (Oxyura leucocephala) is a bird of the family Anatidae (Swans, geese and ducks).
An adult specimen is about 45 centimeters in size and is therefore about the same size as the mallard duck. The woerd has a black crown line and for the rest a pure white head. It has a large, pale blue beak at the base, which is swollen at breeding time. The chest, flanks and back are light brown. The female has a dull brown plumage. She is very similar to the red spiny tail and differs from it by the remarkably large beak and a clearly demarcated black stripe on the cheek.
