Bislicher Insel is known as one of the most important natural refuges on the Lower Rhine. When the Rhine floods, it often reports "land under". Large parts are then covered by water. In the winter of 2020/2021, the special situation arose when a period of frost followed a high-water event, causing the rising water to freeze into ice. A kilometer-wide ice surface covered meadows and fields, over which wild geese circled to find last open water places in the wide landscape.
