Grocer and politician Alfred Hage (1803-1872) ordered this painting from Marstrand on the occasion of his parents' golden jubilee. According to the story passed down from generation to generation, she asked her husband if she could borrow the two brown horses. His father died before the painting was finished. Marstrand painted studies of the two of them.
