About ‘Willem II and his bride Maria Stuart, Anthony van Dyck - 1641’

He's fourteen, she's only nine. This portrait was made when the Dutch prince and the English princess married so young in London. Frederick Henry, the father of William, commissioned the famous Flemish painter Van Dyck for the portrait. The marriage with the English king's daughter was good for the status of the Oranges. On her dress Maria wears the gift of William: a large diamond brooch.
