The windmills of Schiedam are the tallest classical windmills in the world. Six windmills remain of the twenty which once stood in the old town of Schiedam. The windmills were used as roasting mills, grinding malted grain for the roasters, who distilled malt wine for the gin industry. In the distance you can see windmill De Noord and in the foreground windmill De Palmboom. Next to windmill De Palmboom is a motor ship named De Kabouter (The Gnome), which was used as a grain silo in the days when this mill was still a museum mill and milling took place.
