The windmills at Zaanse Schans are an iconic image of Dutch history and traditional landscape. Located on the Zaan, in the Zaandam region, these windmills are one of the Netherlands' best-known tourist attractions. The area is home to a collection of well-preserved windmills, originally built in the 17th and 18th centuries. These mills were used for various purposes, such as grinding grain, processing oil, sawing wood and pumping water.
Today, about six mills still stand on the Zaanse Schans, including the well-known "De Kat", the oldest oil mill in the Netherlands, and the "De Huisman", a wood sawing mill. The mills are often still in operation and can be visited, offering a unique opportunity to see mill work in action.
Zaanse Schans itself is also an open-air museum, where visitors can learn more about the history of the region and the role of mills in the industrial revolution. The picturesque wooden houses, workshops and craft shops add to the nostalgic atmosphere. It is a living monument that gives a clear picture of traditional life in the Netherlands of the past.
