't Haantje is a rather unique windmill. It is one of the very few teeter-totter windmills with scaffolding in the Netherlands. Originally, the mill was built in Amsterdam in 1663 as a grinding and sawing mill for processing stone. In 1716, the mill was rebuilt to produce lead white. In 1820, 't Haantje was moved to Weesp. It was used as an oil mill until 1828, after which it was converted to a corn mill. In 1896 the mill was purchased by the well-known cacao manufacturer Van Houten, who wanted to keep it as an ornament for Weesp. Unfortunately, in or around 1943 the interior was removed and the mill was converted into a residence.
The mill is located on the Korte Stammerdijk in the beautiful and picturesque North Holland town. The sails are occasionally set in motion by a volunteer miller. It is the only smock mill with an octagonal lower tower!
