Windmills in the Alblasserwaard by Sander Poppe

On this peaceful spring evening at Kinderdijk, it was all about simplicity. No spectacular sunset and no spectacular weather, but a typical Dutch landscape in which water, sky and windmills seem to exist in perfect harmony. Along the horizon, the windmills of Kinderdijk stand in a long line. The first windmill immediately catches the eye, whilst the others gradually grow smaller and fade into the distance of the Alblasserwaard.

The water in the foreground reflects parts of the sky, the reeds and the nearest windmill. This creates extra depth without making the image feel cluttered. Broad Dutch cloudy skies with soft contours hang over the landscape. The cool blue of early evening still predominates, whilst the sun’s last light begins to gently warm the colours of the landscape.

What appeals to me about this photograph is the sense of space. The unobstructed horizon, the long line of view from the windmills and the calm water create an image in which your gaze can wander. It is a landscape that does not demand attention, but rather invites you to pause for a moment.
