Woman Reading a Letter - Johannes Vermeer by Accessible Art

One of the most well-known pieces in the Rijksmuseum collection is this magnificent oil painting by the Dutch painter Johannes Vermeer. The image, which was painted at the height of the Dutch Golden Age, shows a young woman in profile, engrossed in a personal letter. The stunning use of real ultramarine, or lapis lazuli, which gives her bedjacket its bright, vibrant blue tone, demonstrates Vermeer's mastery of light and color.
The piece is an investigation of harmony and silent focus. A massive, intricate wall map of Holland and West Friesland hangs behind the woman, giving the small household scene depth and a feeling of the greater globe. The woman's face and the paper she is holding are highlighted by the soft, diffused light coming in from the left side of the frame, which also creates subtle shadows on the white wall. The figure is grounded inside the structured interior by two chairs with lion-head finials. The absence of a window, in contrast to many of Vermeer's other pieces, draws the viewer's attention only to the woman's mental state. This work of art, which was created with extraordinary technical accuracy and emotional nuance, is still a timeless representation of tranquility and the intimate beauty of daily existence.
