Woman at a meal, known as 'The cat's breakfast', Gabriel Metsu, c. 1661 - c. 1664 oil on panel, h 34cm × w 27cm. A woman of simple origins shares her meal with a cat. In the 17th century, it was not uncommon to eat herring with bread (and beer!) on the sober stomach. Ageing paint has caused the yellow pigment to disappear from the stems of the flowers in the vase. As a result, the green has turned blue.
