About ‘Wooden Limes Watchtower’ by resuimages

In Schwäbisch Gmünd, a typical watchtower of the Limes has been rebuilt. It is impressive how large the wooden watchtower is. The Rems valley was the outermost border zone of the Roman Empire for about a hundred years, from around 160 AD to 260 AD. The Limes ran along the northern heights of the Rems valley. The Gmünd area was guarded and controlled by over 1,500 soldiers who were stationed in cohorts in and around Schwäbisch Gmünd. On the western slope of the Rotenbach valley on the internal border between the two Roman provinces of Upper Germania (Germania superior) and Raetia (Raetia), a remarkable change in the construction of the border fortifications can be observed. Here, the Raetian wall and the rampart and palisade of the Upper Germanic Limes meet. This reconstruction can be viewed impressively in Schwäbisch Gmünd in the Rotenbach Valley.
