The beaches of the Baltic resort of Kühlungsborn have groynes that project 40 - 60 metres into the sea for the purpose of coastal protection. Their purpose is to hold back the sand in the surf. Without groynes, many of our sandy beaches will quickly lose width and depth. This is a shortcoming not only for tourism, but explicitly for coastal protection.
