World Cleanup Day is an annual worldwide citizens' campaign to tackle the problem of litter by organising clean-up campaigns. The initiative for the World Cleanup Day came from Estonia: on 3 May 2008 a large-scale clean-up operation was organised under the motto Let's do it 2008 (in Estonian: "Teeme ära 2008"). More than 50,000 Estonians took part in cleaning up litter all over the country. The action resulted in the movement Let's do it! World, from which grew the initiative for the World Cleanup Day.
The first WCD was held on September 15, 2018, with 18 million volunteers across 157 countries registering. The second WCD was held on 21 September 2019, with 20 million volunteers from 180 countries.[1] World Cleanup Day is supported by local associations, such as the vzw Junior Chamber International (JCI) in Belgium, or the Plastic Soup Foundation in the Netherlands.
